Privacy Policy

[Adopted by the CEA Executive Council in December 2007.]

The Canadian Economics Association strives to protect the privacy of personal information collected through its various activities, including the operation of its affiliated journals and the organization of its annual conferences.

Information Collection and Use

The CEA collects personal information when you (i) join the organization; (ii) subscribe to, author for, or referee for the Canadian Journal of Economics or Canadian Public Policy; (iii) join a Canadian economics department or economics division at a Canadian business school or Canadian university college; (iv) submit a paper for or register for the annual meeting of the CEA. The CEA may combine information about you that we have collected through any of the aforementioned sources. The CEA may assign the task of collecting personal information to (i) the publishers of its journals in the course of entering or renewing subscriptions or memberships; (ii) a journal management services provider in the course of administering the editorial process of its journals; and (iii) a conference organization services provider in the course of managing the annual meeting. The CEA strives to ensure that such assigned agents will adhere to this privacy policy.

We typically capture information such as your name, email address, departmental affiliation, mailing address, areas of expertise, and academic status. For the purpose of administering memberships, journal subscriptions, journal submissions, and conference registrations we will also capture certain information about payment transactions. For statistical purposes we may also ask you to provide socio-demographic and personal information on a voluntary basis that includes birth year, gender, type and source of first academic degree, and type and source of highest academic degree. The CEA automatically receives and records information on our server logs from your browser, including your IP address and the page you request.

The CEA uses information for the exclusive purpose of providing services to its members, journal subscribers and contributors, and conference attendees; to improve our services; and to conduct research on the state of the economics profession in Canada.

Information Sharing and Disclosure

The CEA does not rent, sell, or share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated organizations except to provide services that you have requested, or when we have your explicit permission to do so. In particular, we do not make e-mail lists available to third parties. However, we may make use of our e-mail lists at our discretion to distribute materials provided to us that we believe are of significant interest to CEA members and/or Canadian economists.

The CEA will share information with the publishers of its journals to the extent that this is necessary to facilitate delivery of the journals to subscribers. Publishers may also act as agents of the CEA for the purpose of collecting information.

The CEA will respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims. We will share information with Canadian law enforcement agencies in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, or situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person.

Your Ability to Edit and Delete Information

The CEA provides the ability to review personal information stored in our integrated central database, and the CEA facilitates access to personal information stored by affiliated service providers such as the journal publishers or the journal management system. You have the right to request corrections. You also have the right to have information removed from our database. However, we reserve the right to capture publicly available contact and appointment information about Canadian economists employed at Canadian universities as provided to us by the respective university departments for the purpose of CEA-internal research and administration.

Confidentiality and Security

We limit access to personal information about you to officers of the CEA, designated CEA personnel, and assigned agents who provide services on behalf of the CEA subject to this privacy policy. This includes CEA personnel who need to come into contact with that information to provide services to you. The CEA maintains physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards that comply with federal and respective provincial regulations to protect personal information about you.

The CEA does not handle or store any credit card information for purchases carried on our secure economics.ca web server. We employ a method known as "hosted checkout". Transactions are passed on to our payment service provider for completion, and we receive only confirmation of a successful payment or a declined payment.
