With over 2,000 members across the country and from abroad, the Canadian Economics Association (CEA) is the organization of academic economists in Canada. The Association has for its objective the advancement of economic knowledge through the encouragement of study and researchthe issuing of publications, and the furtherance of free and informed discussion of economic questions. The Association as such will not assume a partisan position upon any question of practical politics nor commit its members to any position thereupon.

The CEA publishes the foremost economics journal in Canada, the Canadian Journal of Economics (CJE), and organizes an Annual Conference. The journal Canadian Public Policy / Analyse de politiques (CPP/Adp) is affiliated with the CEA. CEA members receive online access to issues of CJE and CPP/Adp.

2025 CEA Fellows:

The title of Fellow of the Canadian Economics Association is conferred to recognize the achievements and contribution to the discipline of the most prominent economists who have spent a significant portion of their career in Canada. The CEA inducted three new Fellows in 2025:
Angela Redish (University of British Columbia), Michael B. Devereux (University of British Columbia), and Daniel Trefler (University of Toronto)

The Canadian Economics Association is pleased to share the following award winners that were announced at the 59th Annual Meetings of the CEA in Montreal, Quebec.

Doug Purvis Memorial Prize:

The Doug Purvis Memorial Prize went toMonica Jain, Olena Kostyshyna and Xu Zhang for "How Do People View Wage and Price Inflation?", published in the Journal of Monetary Economics (Volume 145, July 2024).

Honourable mention: Oliver Loertscher and Pau S. Pujolas for "Canadian productivity growth: Stuck in the oil sands" published in Canadian Journal of Economics / Revue canadienne d’économique (Volume 57, Issue 2, May 2024).

Thank you to the Purvis Prize Committee members, Martin Boyer, Edda Claus, Brett House, Joseph Macaluso, Cherie Metcalf, and Simon van Norden (Chair).

Canadian Journal of Economics Awards:

The Harry Johnson Prize for best paper in the CJE was awarded to "Regional specialisation: from the geography of industries to the geography of jobs", by Antoine Gervais, James R. Markusen, and Anthony J. Venables, published in the November 2024 issue.

The Robert Mundell Prize for best paper by a young researcher was awarded to “Family‐level responses to the introduction of Tax‐Free Savings Accounts” by Adam M. Lavecchia, published in the February 2024 issue.

Canadian Public Policy Award - John Vanderkamp Award:

Canada Public Policy presented the Vanderkamp prize to Jane Friesen and Brian Krauth (Department of Economics, Simon Fraser University) and Brett Wilmer (Government of British Columbia) for "COVID-19 and the Mental Health of Adolescents in British Columbia" (Volume 50, Number 2).

Canada Public Policy also acknowledged a runner-up: Rupa Banerjee (Ted Rogers School of Management, Toronto Metropolitan University) and Laura Lam (Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources, University of Toronto) for "Paths to Permanence: Permit Categories and Earnings Trajectories of Workers in Canada’s International Mobility Program" (Volume 50, Number S1).

Mike McCracken Award for Economic Statistics:

The Mike McCracken Award for Economic Statistics for the Canadian economist with the best research record during the last five years was presented to Jean-Marie Dufour.

Bank of Canada – CEA Undergraduate Research Poster Awards:

The Award for the Best Paper went to Pierre Lambelet (University of British Columbia) for "Farewell to Low Fares: The Price Effects of Alaska Airlines’ 2016 Acquisition of Virgin America".

The Award for Best Poster (tied) went to Anya Patek (Simon Fraser University) for “Child Care Affordability and Maternal Labour Force Participation: Evidence from British Columbia" and Tayssir Benchoubane (Carleton University) for "Shopping for Answers: The Impact of Geographic Grocery-Retailer Concentration on Canada’s Municipal Food Prices".

The Bank of Canada is pleased to announce that Professor Michelle Alexopoulos, from the University of Toronto, Professor Krishna Pendakur, from Simon Fraser University, and Professor Diego Restuccia, from the University of Toronto, are the recipients of the Bank’s 2024 Fellowship Award. The Bank is also pleased to present this year’s Governor’s Award to Professor Markus Baldauf, from the University of British Columbia.
